Issue 2 EXCESS & MCA Zine Fair
May 28, 2009This past Sunday Just Like Candy Zine was at the MCA Zine fair, run as part of the Sydney’s Writers Festival, 2009.
Rewind 12 months earlier it is amazing to think that this event was the catalyst for the zine. I remember standing there after scourging the hundreds of zine stalls, overwhelmed with inspiration and the urge to be creative.
So there we were one year later, selling issue 2 of Just Like Candy, the excess issue. The turn out was great and and we got to chat to lots of cool people throughout the day! Our table was decked out in excess, an assortment of bright and colourful fabric strewn over it, photos of the fashion shoot, poster board for people to write their interpretations of excess, lollipops, cute little bookmarks and of course – Just Like Candy Zine issue 1 and 2.
I’m always unusually happy after zine fairs. I don’t know what it is exactly. Seeing everyone come together and share their ideas, meeting new people all day and having them take home a copy of something we’ve worked on for months, catching up with the other zine kids and knowing that I’m going home with a whole bunch of amazing new zines to read!
Thanks to everyone who were part of issue two!! And to everyone who came and said hi and bought a copy on the day! We hope you’re enjoying reading it!
P.S. For those of you in Melbourne, Issue 2 is now available at Sticky, 10 Campbell St Arcade (under Flinders St Station) so check it out! Watch this space for news on stockists! Sydney and Adelaide coming soon!

We’re currently looking for contributors for issue 2 in the areas of music, fashion, art and film! Think EXCESS! If you’re interested in contributing something email us at justlikecandyzine@gmail.com with your idea.

In the beginning… 2008 and the first issue.
January 9, 2009The first issue of Just Like Candy was released in September 2008. We’d first had the idea to start a zine in May 2008 at the MCA zine fair where we became inspired and within seconds of talking about the idea of making a zine had decided to make our own. We spent the next few months thinking of ideas, asking friends if they would be interested in contributing, going to gigs, op shopping, researching zine fairs, stockists, deciding on a name and finally learning how to use indesign for the first time to create the layout!
In 2008 we attended the Sydney Uni zine fair (11th Sept 2008), TINA zine fair in Newcastle (5th October 2008 ) and the VoiceWorks launch at Glebe Library (20th Dec 2008). We also stocked the zine at Sticky zine store in Melbourne and Paint It Black Records in Newtown, Sydney.
ISSUE ONE
